Cinnamon Applesauce Ornaments

The Christmas ornaments we made were made using 1 cup cinnamon and 3/4 - 1 cup applesauce.  Mix well and roll out with a rolling pin.  Make the shapes with cookie cutters.  Make a hole to add ribbon to hang.  Air dry - flipping to dry evenly or you can bake in the oven on your lowest setting for an hour or two.  Just make sure you flip them over so they dry evenly.

They smell wonderful and they last for a couple of years!

Pierojki

Pierojki

In the Ukraine, people make pierojkies.  For our taste test, I used store bought potato and cheese pierogies but cooked them the traditional Ukrainian way, which is brushed with beaten egg yolk, and baked at 350 for 25 minutes.

Christmas Badge

WOW!  Only 4 girls yesterday!  It was a small group, but we had a good time!

The younger girls finished the Christmas Badge.  If you are interested in completing the badge, please look at the requirements below and see what you would like to do.

HOLIDAY BADGE (specific)(Discover the World)
By  Marie Dichoso-Beavers, Troop 114
This badge can be earned numerous times, once for each holiday.
Penquins:  Do 3 requirements, including the two starred.
Otters: Do 4 requirements, including the two starred.
Dolphins: Do 5 requirements, including the two starred.
Butterflies: Do 6 requirements, including the two starred.
______ *1. Decide on a holiday you would like to study. Find out (online or in books) about the history of the holiday you’ve chosen. Where is it celebrated in the world, and when? If it is not celebrated in any other country, find out about a similar holiday in another country. For example, we celebrate Independence Day on July 4th, a holiday unique to America. However, various countries have their own Independence Day, unique to each country. Tell your Troop what you have learned.
______ *2. Find out how your holiday is celebrated in America, and then two other countries besides America.
You should find out about the customs, foods eaten, songs/dances, costumes, decorations, etc. of each of the
countries. Compare these to those in America. Tell your Troop what you have learned.
______ 3. Do a craft (such as a decoration, ornament, greeting card, etc.) based on the holiday you pick.
Display your craft at a Troop meeting and tell your Troop about it. Butterflies need to do two crafts, one from
America and one from another country they chose in #2. Eagles need to do three crafts, one from America, and
one from each of the countries they chose in #2.
______ 4. Make a dish eaten during the holiday you pick. Butterflies need to do two dishes. Eagles need to
make an entire meal. The dishes can be typical American food eaten during the holiday, or customary holiday
food eaten in another country (such as one of the countries chosen in #2).
______ 5. Find a game that commemorates the holiday you chose. Play this game with your family, friends, or
Troop. The game can be one played in America, or in another country you chose in #2.
______ 6. Find out what is typically worn (a costume) in another country (one chosen in #2). Show your troop
pictures of the holiday costume, or dress in that costume at a Troop meeting. Tell your Troop about the
costume (why is is worn, what the parts of the costume signify, etc.).
______ 7. Find out what organizations do special things for the homeless, elderly, indigent, veterans, or military
during the holiday you chose. Volunteer your time individually or as a Troop for one of these organizations.
Otters need to volunteer at least 1 hour, Dolphins at least 2 hours, Butterflies at least 3 hours, Eagles at least 4
hours. Some ideas include buying and wrapping presents for needy children, caroling at a homeless shelter,
sending care packages to the military, etc.
______ 8. Holidays supposed to be joyous celebrations, but unfortunately they often leave many people feeling
very sad. Find out why this is. Give your craft, baked goods, or meal (from #s 3 and 4) to an elderly person or
another person who could use cheering up during this holiday.
______ 9. Help your family, friends, or Troop celebrate the holiday you chose. Help decorate the house or
meeting place, prepare food for a meal, etc. Tell your family, friends, or Troop what you have learned about the
holiday in requirements 1 and 2. Be sure to help clean up afterward!
______ 10. Research a song that celebrate the holiday you chose. Teach the song to your Troop.
______ 11. Attend or take part in a local parade that commemorates the holiday you chose, OR attend a
celebration or service at a church or festival that commemorates the holiday you chose.
______ 12 Take pictures as you work on this merit badge and celebrate the holiday you chose. Put the pictures
and other items (recipes, newspaper articles, souvenirs, postcards, ticket stubs, etc.) in a scrapbook and
display the scrapbook at a Troop meeting.

As a troop, we did the first 2, with the exchange students.  Yesterday, we did the crafts (#3) and although we didn't make the foods, we tasted the foods, from Korea and Ukraine (#4).  Also, if you sold the Christmas Cards for Soldiers, that covers #8.  (Please remember to get me the money and unsold cards.)  If you are interested in earning the badge, please complete your required number of activities and be prepared to share with the troop when we return!

Welcome Aboard!

We had a good turn out at our Parents' Meeting.  I enjoyed getting to know all of you.  The girls looked like they were enjoying themselves!

Thank you for all of the really great suggestions!

I am looking for one person to step up as a co-leader to make sure we always have at least 2 adults at a meeting.  I hope that everyone will volunteer to help out occasionally and to share any ideas you may have.  If any of you have outside people who may be willing to help us out, please let me know and we can make arrangements for them to come in.  At any time, if any of you would like to "lead" an activity, please let me know.  I know it is more fun for the girls if they have a variety of adult helpers.

I did get releases for Hailie, Jade, Savannah, Mackenzie, Adilynn and Arianna.  Thank you for getting those turned right in.  Hannah is hoping to get more older girls involved so if any of you know of older girls, please let them know.  I will be putting flyers in the middle school today or tomorrow.

I am hoping to get the exchange students to come in to talk about Christmas in their countries.  It would help if they had some questions to go by.  If anyone can think of questions for them, please post them and I will pass them on.  It is easier for teenagers to present things if they have questions ahead of time.  Thanks!

Enjoy your week!  I will see you on December 4th.  We would like to be able to start right at 6 so if you can come a little early, that will help!
